Nalut 302 has the identification number on both sides – Code ES-LCG 302.

It also has other distinctive features that make it easy to distinguish from the other two Class 300 patrol boats in service with the so-called Libyan coast guard.

Construction in Italy (Adria) and the gift to Libya by the Meloni Government

Nalut 302 (ES-LCG 302), Gharyan 301 (WS-LCG 301), and TS-LCG 300 are three newly built patrol boats, built by the Vittoria shipyard (Adria) for the Italian government, with the plan to deliver them to the Libyan government.

In February 2023, the completion of the first patrol boat was celebrated in Italy at the shipyard in the presence of Minister Tajani, European Commissioner for Enlargement and Neighborhood Policy Olivér Varhelyi, and Libyan Foreign Minister Najla Al Mangoush (see, among other things, primarovigo.it, gettyimages, video dai cantieri Vittoria e video news):

On August 2, 2023, the Italian government (Meloni Executive) handed over these three patrol boats to the so-called Libyan Coast Guard. On August 2, 2023, the spokesperson for the Libyan militias made the happy announcement on Twitter (link https://x.com/rgowans/status/1686769118907691008?s=20)

Translation:

August 2, 2023. This morning, Wednesday, the Chief of the Italian Coast Guard and Port Security Agency signed a handover and acceptance agreement with the Italian authorities and the European Union for three GAT-class patrol boats, specifically designed for maritime rescue operations. This agreement is based on the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two parties in Tripoli on January 28, 2022. The vessels will enter service immediately upon their arrival at the Tripoli Naval Base from Italy and will be manned by officers and non-commissioned officers of the Italian Coast Guard and Port Security Agency, trained in Italy. These vessels will conduct maritime rescue operations in waters under the sovereignty and responsibility of Libya, supporting maritime rescue efforts off the coast of Libya. This is done in support of all national institutions, including the Port and Maritime Transport Authority, the Civil Aviation Authority, the National Petroleum Corporation, the Ministry of Marine Resources, and other relevant bodies.

The Crimes of Nalut 302

The Libyan crew of the patrol boat Nalut 302 routinely commits crimes at sea, including murder. They begin immediately after training.

The crimes known to date are as follows:

  • On March 16, 2024, the crew of the Geo Barents, a Doctors Without Borders vessel, was attacked: Nalut approached at high speed during a rescue operation, threatening the rescuers and endangering the shipwrecked. Despite this, the Meloni government sanctioned the Geo Barents by applying the Piantedosi decree, accusing it of failing to obey the so-called Libyan coast guard.
